Nick Anvelink Claims Feature Win in Dirt Kings Tour Visit

By Kevin Bargender

Unity — After a long absence at Spring Lake Speedway, Late Models returned as the Dirt Kings Late Models made its second stop of its tour at the track on Friday.

After a runner-up finish the previous week, Nick Anvelink secured his first win of the season at SLS. After walking away with a heat win earlier in the day, Anvelink looked ready to perform well in the feature.

The race started off with a bang as Adam Janke got into the backstretch wall on the first lap, bringing out a caution. On the restart, Anvelink jumped back in front of the pack and pushed through lap traffic as Brett Swedberg pursued in second place.

A multi-car collision between turns one and two brought out a second caution. The caution helped Ron Berna move through the field and crack into the top three positions.

Anvelink pulled away from the field for the victory as rain began falling at the end of the race. Berna captured second place, passing Swedberg in the closing laps.

The rain intensified after the Late Model feature, causing a short delay in action. As the rain subsided, the track dried and the Super Stocks entered the oval.

Starting outside of pole sitter Scott Geiger, Cody Kummer grabbed an early lead and distanced himself from the pack to take the Super Stock feature win. The top four were: Kummer, Geiger, Troy Fransway and David Elliott.

Randy Luedtke secured a Pure Stock feature after starting outside of pole sitter Jim Thur. Luedtke took the lead from the start and finished strong. The top five were: Luedtke, Thur, Brent Hauge, Bo Benish and Garret Strachola.

The Cow Bell Street Stock Tour opened its season at SLS Friday and combined with local drivers to enter 32 cars into the event. After a qualifying feature, the field was set with 20 street stocks for the main feature.

Pole sitter Jim Randall corralled the feature win as the field jockeyed for positions behind him.

Starting from the seventh position, Team One SixX Motorsports driver, Karl Genett ascended into the top three early on and looked to finish strong. Genett remained in the top five before experiencing mechanical issues during a caution midway through the event and exited the track for the night.

Alex Crasper suffered a similar fate to Genett. Crasper started in second and challenged for the lead early and often before getting tagged on the left side of his car coming out of turn two during a restart. Crasper would leave the track, returning late to finish 11th.

Through the carnage, Kyle Genett endured the cautions and found his way into the top five late in the feature. The brother and fellow teammate of Karl Genett went on to finish third.

The top five finishers for the Street Stock feature were: Randall, Ron Hanestad, Kyle Genett, Jesse Krahn and Parker Anderson. Anderson recovered from a mid-race spin between turns three and four to finish in the top five.

Kasey Gross captured his second feature victory of the season in the Hornet series Friday night at SLS. Gross started on the pole, but did not walk away from the field as Jennifer Wegner and Mark Schoone stayed within a few car lengths of Gross throughout most of the race.

The top five finishers for the Hornets were: Gross, Wegner, Schoone, Chad Halterman and Armond Love.

Joshua Vanderleest won the 6 Cylinder feature, with Carter Grewe finishing as runner-up.
Racing returns to Spring Lake Speedway on June 8, as the track will host Badgerland Vinatage Modifieds along with all six racing classes. The track will also be celebrating Kids Night with “meet the drivers,” featuring autographs, pictures and candy on the front stretch of the track before racing action begins. Bikes and prizes will be given away throughout the night as part of a kid’s ticket drawing. Racing begins at 7:30 p.m. Keep up to date with additional news and details on our Facebook page, Spring Lake Speedway & Events.
