Niznik Captures Feature win in K&N Night

By Kevin Bargender

Unity, WI. May 26 — K&N sponsored Spring Lake Speedway Friday night as the track hosted Modifieds, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, Pure Stocks, Street Stocks and Hornets. Spectator races followed the regular racing action to end the night.

Jake Smith won the feature for the Modifieds as he held off challenger Grant Southworth. Starting in tenth position, Smith made his way through the pack quickly to grab the lead by the midway point of the feature. Southworth, who won a heat race earlier in the night, made his way through the pack from sixth place to finish second. Andy Karl finished in third followed by Kent Baxter and Chris Flick to round out the top five.

Mark Stender started on the pole for the Super Stocks, but it was Randy Spacek who took the checkered flag first in the feature event. Spacek, who won the heat race earlier in the evening, maneuvered his car around Stender early on and dominated the feature as the pack stayed single file throughout the race. The 23E of Terry Kroening finished in second as he also moved past Stender. Stender finished third with Terran Spacek and Scott Geiger finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.

Kyle Genett found himself in winner’s circle Friday as he led the pack to the checkered flag in the Street Stock feature. Genett won both the feature and heat races to sweep the night in the series. Early in the feature, pole sitter Jared Lindner held the lead from Genett but Genett was up for the challenge and took first from Lindner. Later in the feature, Lindner faded back as the 12 of Cody Kummer passed by for second place. Lindner took his car to the pits early as smoke could be observed coming from the front of the car. As Lindner fell back, Genett continued to build a commanding lead to take the win in commanding fashion. Kummer finished second followed by Karl Genett, Nate Hauge and Matt Wilke to complete the top five.

The 42 of Paul Niznik won the Modified Feature after starting just outside of pole sitter Kevin Rogers. Rogers had a rough night as he got loose coming to the green to start the race and fell back to fifth position after only one lap. Chris Oertel took over the second spot but was overtaken by heat winner Matt Leer after a caution involving Rogers. Oertel fell back to fourth as he was challenged and passed by the 44 of Jared Loos midway through the feature. Leer finished second, followed by Loos, Oertel and Steve Lavasseur for the top five.

Tucker Quinn held the pole position for the Pure Stocks and did not give up any ground as he won the feature comfortably. The six car feature race had mostly single file racing throughout. Heat winner Jim Thur placed second followed by Brent Hauge, Kevin Teske and Randy Luedtke to round out the top five finishers.

Kasey Gross was the fourth driver of the night to win both a Heat and Feature race. Gross made quick work of the pack and jumped out to an early lead in the Hornet Feature. Gross passed by lap traffic with ease as the pack fell single file behind the leader.
Jason Junker took the runner-up spot followed by Jake Halterman, Brandon Langbecker and Chad Halterman to complete the top five and finish up the regular racing for the night at SLS.

The spectator races provided a dramatic ending to the night of racing. In a semi-final race a white Ford Crown Victoria got loose going into turn four and lost control of his car, crashing hard into the front stretch wall. The driver escaped the collision without major injury, but his car appeared totaled. Scott Davis would go on to win the finals over Austin Leffel after a near collision in the back stretch between the two drivers. Davis was awarded a season pass for the series victory.
K&N awarded all feature winners K&N gift cards.
